Calorie (small calorie)

The small calorie is the thermal energy required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. It is equal to $4.184 \ \text{J}$.

Food calorie (large calorie)

$10^{3}$ small calories is a food calorie. When we talk about calories in our food, we usually mean large calories.
